waikiki 6.30 a.m.

Even at 6.30 in the morning the beach in Waikiki isn’t empty; but there are less people, and the water is a deeper blue, the skies hesitant still, and tiny silver fish swimming around the lagoon.

There were two dads and three kids on the beach this morning, every one in their swimsuit and McDonalds Breakfast takeaway bags. There was running and peals of laughter and I watched them and I yearned for it then; quietly hoped that one day I’d find myself at 7 a.m. on a quiet beach with kids that are mine and a cheeky breakfast that is special only because we never usually get McDonald’s for breakfast. That one day I’d be making life and adventure for other people, too.
