slice of childhood

I went to see The Incredibles 2 today and it was so, so good. I laughed out loud, I cringed, I curled back into my seat in fear, I cooed, I squealed, I laughed some more, I fist-pumped the air, I wanted to call my parents and thank them, I didn’t cry, because it is so joyful a movie for that. I want to watch it all over again. The dialogue ! The female friendships ! The portrayal of adolesence ! Parenthood ! The wonderfully subtle, graceful, modern and unafraid depiction of traditional gender roles ! Can we please talk about it ? I need to talk about it. And watch it again. Please ? It isn’t perfect, of course; there are some characters I wish I’d seen more of and I found some additions a little gimmicky (although I will acknowledge that may be because a twenty-three year old female is not the film’s only target) but it doesn’t matter. I think, looking back on it, it is obvious how much love has been put into that movie, and how much joy, and they make it that much better an experience. Pixar, thank you for bringing the Parrs and Lucius and Edna back to us. You were right, it was worth the wait.
